My Dearest Beloved Mother And Boss Has Answered The Home Call
A Distinguished Diplomat, Scholar, and Daughter of Grace
With profound sadness and deep respect, I mourn the passing of Professor Joy Uche Angela Ugwu, a towering figure in Nigeria’s diplomatic, academic, and intellectual history. Her transition marks the close of an era defined by brilliance, integrity, and an unyielding commitment to the service of God and humanity.
To me, she was far more than a mentor — she was a mother, a leader, and a guiding light. Her words, wisdom, and nurturing spirit shaped my path and that of many others privileged to have been under her influence.
Professor Joy Ugwu was not only a trailblazer but also a beacon of hope and excellence whose exemplary career continues to inspire generations across Africa and beyond. As Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and later as Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations, she elevated our nation’s voice on the global stage with eloquence, grace, and unmatched intellect. Her leadership, poise, and courage in diplomacy earned her admiration at home and respect across the world.
Beyond her public service, Professor Ugwu was a devoted mentor, teacher, and advocate — especially for women in leadership. Her tenure as Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and her scholarly depth in international relations transformed minds and institutions alike. She was passionate about the pursuit of knowledge and the building of character.
She lived a purposeful life — guided by faith, discipline, and a deep belief in Nigeria’s potential and destiny. Her humility, warmth, and unwavering commitment to excellence will forever remain a model for us all.
Her passing is a profound loss not only to Nigeria but to the global diplomatic community. Yet, her legacy endures — in her writings, in the institutions she built, and in the countless lives she touched with wisdom and grace.
We celebrate a life of service, a mind of brilliance, and a heart of gold. May her beautiful soul rest in perfect peace, and may the light of her legacy continue to illuminate the path for future generations.
With deepest respect and eternal gratitude,
