Obi Drags Deji Adeyanju To Court – Seeks ₦1.5bn For Defamation

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has sued human rights activist Deji Adeyanju over alleged defamatory statements made on social media.

Gatekeepers News reports that the suit, filed before the Anambra State High Court in Onitsha, accuses Adeyanju of publishing false and damaging remarks about Obi, which the former governor described as “malicious, baseless, and reckless.”

Obi is asking the court to compel Adeyanju to issue a public apology, both online and in three national newspapers, for the alleged defamation.

He also wants an order directing the activist to delete all offensive posts from his “X” account (@adeyanjudeji), verified Facebook page (“Adeyanju Deji”), Instagram handle (@AdeyanjuDeji), and any other online platform.

According to the court filing, the posts contained several derogatory terms labelling Obi as a “religious bigot,” “fraud,” and “political prostitute,” among others. Obi claims these remarks have severely damaged his personal reputation and political standing.

He is also seeking a perpetual injunction restraining Adeyanju and his associates from making or sharing any further defamatory content against him.

In addition, Obi is demanding ₦500 million in aggravated damages for Adeyanju’s “reckless and malicious publications,” and another ₦1 billion as general damages to compensate for the emotional distress and reputational harm allegedly suffered.
