Northern Youth Groups Slam Atiku For Supporting Kanu’s Release

A coalition of northern groups under the aegis of the Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF) has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his recent declaration supporting protests demanding the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Gatekeepers Newreports that in a statement on Thursday signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Sama Musa, the NYF described Atiku’s position as “deeply inconsistent and ethically troubling,” saying it raises serious concerns about his credibility and suitability to lead Nigeria.

“The tragic loss of life, particularly among the over 500 Northerners and law enforcement personnel attributed to Kanu’s incitement, cannot be overlooked or trivialised,” Musa said.
“These are not mere statistics; they represent families torn apart, communities shattered, and a collective grief that resonates through society.”

The group accused Atiku of showing “indifference” to the pain of Nigerians who suffered during violent incidents linked to IPOB, arguing that his advocacy for Kanu’s release “sends a troubling message” that political expediency outweighs human suffering.

“By advocating for the unconditional release of a figure whose actions have incited violence and division, Atiku sends a troubling message — that the lives lost and the suffering endured by countless individuals in the North are secondary,” the statement read.

The NYF said Atiku’s stance raises “significant ethical questions” about his empathy and understanding, qualities they believe are essential for leadership.

“How can a leader claim to represent the interests of all citizens while disregarding the pain of a substantial segment of the population?” the group asked.

Musa urged Nigerians to critically assess Atiku’s political intentions ahead of future elections, stressing that leadership should be measured by “compassion, accountability, and integrity.”

“Do we believe that a leader who overlooks the suffering of his constituents can effectively address the myriad challenges facing Nigeria? The answer, we contend, is a resounding no,” he added.

The NYF also warned that Atiku’s position could undermine national unity and worsen existing ethnic and regional tensions.

“By failing to address the ramifications of Kanu’s actions, Abubakar risks exacerbating existing tensions and fostering an environment of mistrust,” the group stated.

The coalition urged Nigerians to prioritise leaders who demonstrate a genuine commitment to unity, inclusivity, and justice for all citizens, regardless of region or background.

“The path to a more united and prosperous Nigeria lies in our hands, and it is our responsibility to choose leaders who will champion the cause of inclusivity and justice for all,” the NYF said.
