Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has lamented the state of the region’s roads, describing them as nightmarish and highlighting the challenges motorists face daily.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Governor emphasised the urgent need for collaboration between state governments in Niger Delta and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to rehabilitate deteriorating road networks.
The Governor made his appeal during the official commissioning of the NDDC’s new state office in Edjeba, Warri, a project that
had been under construction since 2013.
Oborevwori expressed particular concern over the deplorable condition of the Warri-Sapele-Benin dual carriageway, noting that his administration has already sanctioned ₦35.7 billion for its reconstruction. He described the road as a vital link connecting Delta State to Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River states.
Calling for strategic partnerships, the governor urged the NDDC and state governments to prioritize the rehabilitation of key federal roads throughout the Niger Delta.
He also praised NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, for his leadership and hailed the new office as a symbol of institutional stability and renewed purpose.
Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, echoed the call for accountability, noting that President Tinubu had directed the NDDC to complete all unfinished projects in the region.
He advised NDDC staff to preserve the new facilities and remain impartial, asserting, that NDDC is for everyone and not for a clique of people. Momoh further warned Delta communities to beware of certain people who want to cause problems that would create unrest.
Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of the NDDC, described the new Delta office as part of the Commission’s shift from transactions to transformation.
He also revealed a partnership with the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) on ₦650 billion worth of infrastructure projects, assuring that the Commission remains committed to timely project delivery.
The inauguration attracted several dignitaries, including Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong; Chairman of the House Committee on NDDC, Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu; Senator Ned Nwoko; and House of Representatives member, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, among others.
