A Lagos High Court has directed MultiChoice Nigeria Limited to pay ₦5 million in general damages to a subscriber for unlawfully and intentionally disconnecting his active cable-TV service despite evidence of payment.

Gatekeepers News reports that the judgment, handed down on September 30, 2025, by Justice Razak Olukolu in case LD/ADR/2297/2019, was brought by Ben Onuora, Obi of Okwudor in Imo State, who originally sought ₦20 million for emotional distress and repeated disruption of his DStv service.

The court found that MultiChoice breached the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 (FCCPA), Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission – Abuse of Dominance Regulations 2022, and Section 13 of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency Law 2015, holding that the company acted wrongfully in its disconnection of a valid subscription.

Beyond the monetary award, the court directed MultiChoice to immediately restore the claimant’s subscription, extend the service period to cover the time lost during the wrongful disconnection, and pay interest at 10 percent per annum until full payment of the judgment sum. Legal costs, however, declined.

Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) welcomed the verdict, describing it as a strong affirmation of consumer rights under the FCCPA.

The commission highlighted the ruling alongside another judgment from Enugu State that struck down a transport company’s no-refund policy, underscoring the growing enforcement of consumer-protection laws in Nigeria.
