Many Feared Trapped – 15 Rescued As 2-Storey Building Collapses In Lagos

Several residents are feared trapped after a two-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Monday at No. 54 Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop, near UBA Bank in Oyingbo, Lagos.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) said it received an emergency call around 12:20 a.m. and immediately deployed rescue teams from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station, who arrived at the scene within minutes to begin operations.

Margaret Adeseye, controller general of LSFRS, confirmed that 15 people had been rescued as of press time. The victims comprised seven men, four women, and four children, all sustaining varying degrees of injury.

According to Adeseye, those rescued were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute Metta and the General Hospital in Odan, Lagos Island, for treatment.

She said preliminary findings revealed that the structure had earlier been identified as distressed before it eventually caved in while residents were still inside.

Adeseye added that the search and rescue operation was ongoing, with responders working tirelessly to locate more people suspected to be under the rubble.

She assured that the LSFRS, in partnership with other emergency management agencies, was fully committed to ensuring every trapped person is accounted for.
