Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, has regained his freedom from Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja after satisfying his bail requirements.
Gatekeepers News reports that Sowore, alongside Aloy Ejimakor—former counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu—and 11 other protesters of the #FreeNnamdiKanu movement, was released on Monday.
Recall that the group had been arrested in Abuja during a demonstration demanding Kanu’s release from the custody of the
Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been held since 2021.
Police had charged the activists last Friday with inciting public disturbance. Following their arraignment, an Abuja magistrate court granted them bail, setting the conditions at ₦500,000 with two sureties each, verified national identification numbers (NINs), three-year tax clearance certificates, and valid passports.
However, shortly after the court ruling, security operatives reportedly re-arrested Sowore outside the court premises before eventually complying with the bail order.
Ejimakor and the other 11 protesters were initially remanded in Kuje prison pending verification of their sureties but have since been granted release.
