1 Dies – Eight Rescued As 3-Storey Building Collapses In Apapa

A three-storey building under demolition collapsed on Thursday in Ajegunle area of Apapa, Lagos State, leaving one person dead and eight others rescued.

Gatekeepers News reports that Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

He said the agency’s response team arrived at the scene around 11:09 a.m. after receiving distress calls and discovered that the structure had completely caved in, trapping several workers beneath the rubble.

Oke-Osanyintolu said, “Following distress alerts at 11:09 a.m., LASEMA activated the state’s emergency response plans from Agbowa and Alausa,”

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that a three-storey building with a penthouse had collapsed at No. 28 Baale Alayabiagba Street, Alayabiagba community, Ajegunle, in the Apapa area of Lagos. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.”

According to LASEMA, eight adult males were rescued and received on-site first aid from the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being transferred to Ajeromi General Hospital for further treatment, while one person was confirmed dead at the scene.

Residents said the building was being manually demolished when it suddenly collapsed, trapping workers inside.

Responders at the site included officials from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigeria Police Force.
