Kannywood actor Yakubu Mato, popularly known as Malam Nata’ala, has passed away after battling a prolonged illness.
Gatekeepers News reports that his death was confirmed on Sunday by Ali Nuhu, Director General of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), who shared a condolence message on Instagram.
Nuhu wrote, “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. May Allah have mercy on Malam Nata’ala. May his final abode be paradise. Amen.”
Reports indicate that the actor died on Sunday at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. His deteriorating health had previously stirred public concern, prompting financial support and interventions from well-meaning Nigerians, including assistance from the Yobe State Government.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues and fans mourning his loss. Fauziya D. Sulaiman, a screenwriter who worked with him, expressed her grief on Facebook, writing, “Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. I just received the news of the death of Malam Nata’ala. May Allah forgive him and make his illness a means of mercy for him.”
Similarly, Ya Jalo Badama, Yobe State Commissioner for Women Affairs, described the late actor as a revered figure who made significant contributions to the entertainment industry and was actively involved in Governor Mai Mala Buni’s campaign efforts.
Badama said, “Malam Nata’ala was a respected figure known for his immense contributions to the entertainment industry and his active participation during the campaign of His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni.”
“His death is a great loss not only to the film industry but also to the APC family and the entire people of Yobe State. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus as his eternal resting place.”
