Edo State Government has constituted a Special Committee on Museum of West African Art (MOWAA).
Gatekeepers News reports that this followed public protests and petitions from members of the Benin Royal Palace, Traditional Council, and other concerned citizens over the museum’s operations and governance structure.
According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Musa Ikhilor, the decision underscores the recognition of Benin Royal Palace as the rightful custodian of the kingdom’s cultural heritage and artifacts.
Governor Monday Okpebholo approved the committee’s formation to engage international donors, partners, and trustees of MOWAA; determine the museum’s legal and operational status; clarify the role and stake of the Benin Royal Palace; and make appropriate recommendations to the state government.
The committee is chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, with General Cecil Esekhaigbe (Rtd.) as vice chairman. Other members include former deputy governor Lucky Imasuen, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and Roland Itoyah Otaru (SAN), while Barrister Iryn Omorogiuwa serves as secretary.
The committee is expected to begin work immediately and present its findings within a short period.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the cultural legacy of the Benin Kingdom and ensuring transparency, accountability, and mutual respect in all heritage-related initiatives.
