Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed that electricity distribution companies (DisCos) collectively generated ₦1.58 trillion in revenue between January and August 2025.

Gatekeepers News reports that NERC’s monthly DisCos Commercial Performance Fact Sheets show that the figure marks a 50.48 percent increase compared to the ₦1.05 trillion earned during the same period in 2024.

Data from the report indicates that the DisCos posted ₦559.32 billion in revenue for the first quarter (Q1) of 2025 and ₦573.53 billion in the second quarter (Q2). In July, the companies collected ₦193.96 billion, while August saw a slightly lower figure of ₦191.11 billion.

By contrast, in 2024, total earnings stood at ₦292.71 billion in Q1, ₦433.01 billion in Q2, ₦162.14 billion in July, and ₦168.7 billion in August.

NERC explained that the ₦191.11 billion collected in August 2025 came from customer bills totaling ₦238.67 billion. Despite a 1.47 percent drop in billing compared to July’s ₦193.96 billion, the regulator reported a minor improvement in collection efficiency, which rose from 79.77 percent to 80.07 percent.

According to the commission, the average approved tariff across all DisCos for August stood at ₦116.25 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while the average actual collection was ₦92.75 per kWh.
