The Nigerian Senate has dismissed reports of an alleged plan to remove Senate President Godswill Akpabio, describing the claims as false and designed to cause confusion within the legislature.

Gatekeepers Newreports that speaking during Wednesday’s plenary, the Senate Leader clarified that no discussions or moves toward Akpabio’s impeachment had taken place. He explained that comments attributed to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu were taken out of context and misrepresented.

“From my discussions with Senator Kalu, it was obvious that the statement attributed to him was misrepresented,” the Senate Leader said.

He warned that such misinformation was capable of distracting lawmakers from urgent national issues, stressing that senators remain united behind Akpabio’s leadership and have adopted a “zero-tolerance” stance toward distractions.

“There is no tension in this Senate. We are focused on delivering for Nigerians, and we will not allow rumours to derail our work,” he added.

The clarification was officially noted during plenary, as lawmakers reaffirmed their confidence in Akpabio’s leadership. The chamber’s firm response was widely viewed as a clear message against attempts to sow disunity or political instability within the National Assembly.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North, had earlier stated that there was indeed an attempt to impeach Akpabio but said it had been foiled. Addressing journalists on Tuesday, Kalu attributed the episode to what he called a “family misunderstanding.”

“There were attempts, but we didn’t allow that to happen. We are one big family, and it’s not going to happen,” Kalu said.

On the state of the economy, the former Abia governor admitted that Nigerians are experiencing hardship but maintained that key macroeconomic indicators are improving.

“As a businessman, I am feeling the pain too. The macro economy is doing well, but the micro economy is not. Foreign investors are coming in. What is left is for this progress to trickle down so people can eat daily and return to farming,” he noted.

Kalu added that both President Bola Tinubu and the Senate are working relentlessly to revive the economy and ensure food security.

Responding to questions about the political future of Anambra State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, Kalu described him as a “progressive” and hinted at his possible move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I think after all the court cases, he is a progressive like myself, President Tinubu, and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, as well as the governors of Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, and other APC governors. So, Soludo is a progressive. I don’t see anything wrong with him joining us. In fact, it is confirmed that he will join the APC. He has no other alternative than to come and join us,” he said.

Kalu also expressed confidence that President Tinubu would secure a second term in office, declaring that “the president currently has no real opposition.”
