President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the country will overcome its current economic challenges, insisting that poverty will not define the nation’s future.

Gatekeepers Newreports that speaking on Wednesday at the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) Annual Conference in Abuja, the President declared that Nigeria is on a path toward recovery and sustainable growth despite the hardship caused by ongoing reforms.

“We may be poor; poverty is not going to be our milestone. We are going to come out of it,” Tinubu said.

He explained that his administration’s economic reforms, though difficult, were necessary to place the nation on a solid foundation.

“On our part, this administration remains committed to securing our nation, sustaining economic stability, and widening the circle of opportunity for all citizens,” Tinubu stated.

“The reforms we have undertaken have been challenging, but they are designed to place our economy on a strong and enduring footing. We have taken steps to restore macroeconomic balance, encourage investment, and rebuild confidence.”

The President said signs of progress are already visible in several sectors, but acknowledged that more work must be done to ensure that growth translates into better living conditions for citizens.

“We know there is more work to do, and we remain focused on ensuring that growth translates into real improvements in the daily lives of Nigerians,” he added.

Tinubu also emphasised the role of cooperation and trust among all sectors — government, private sector, civil society, and the media — in achieving national progress.

“Economic reforms and institutional improvements alone cannot build the Nigeria we seek. Nation-building requires cooperation. It requires trust. It requires a shared understanding that our future is tied together,” he said.

He urged the media to continue exercising its role responsibly in fostering unity and reasoned national dialogue.

“The media has a distinct responsibility to help shape a climate of reason and unity. Let us choose clarity over confusion, responsibility over recklessness, and hope over despair. The stories we tell ourselves as a nation and as a people influence the country we become,” he said.

‘Encourage Nigeria’s Military’

President Tinubu also called on citizens to show greater support and appreciation for members of the Nigerian armed forces.

“Yes, we are challenged by terrorism, banditry, and others. We recognise that. Are we doing something about it? Are we inspiring the armed forces? Are we encouraging them to fight?” he asked.

“They put their lives on the line to defend the sovereignty of this country. It is our responsibility,” the President added.
