Kabiru Turaki, the newly elected National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has pledged to restore discipline within the party and ensure it serves the interests of its members.
Gatekeepers News reports that his election took place on Saturday during the party’s national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, where delegates at the Adamasingba Stadium gave him 1,516 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Turaki acknowledged the heavy responsibility entrusted to the new national working committee and stressed the importance of translating the mandate directly to Nigerians.
The PDP National Chairman said the executive would soon outline its guiding principles and operational framework to guide the party’s activities.
He said, “The cross you have given us means that you watch us also take it to the Nigerian people, and that we shall do.”
Turaki described the task ahead as challenging but reaffirmed the committee’s readiness to meet it. He said, “Our party is at a crossroads now, but we are up to the task; we are up to the challenge.”
“Very soon, we shall be rolling out what our guiding principles will be and the modus operandi for achieving them. When we do that, we shall be hitting the ground running from day one.”
He also highlighted the PDP’s unique position as the only political party that has retained its name since its founding, emphasizing its identity as a party of the Nigerian people.
The chairman said, “Today, as I talk to you, the only political party that has retained its name is the Peoples Democratic Party. This has been possible because this is the party of the Nigerian people. Make no mistake about it; we are returning the party to you, the people. There will be no more impunity.”
