Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity, triggering cheers in a packed Dhaka courtroom.
Gatekeepers News reports that Hasina, 78, who has refused to return from India to attend the trial, was found guilty on three counts, including incitement, ordering killings, and failing to prevent atrocities, Judge Golam Mortuza Mozumder said. “We have decided to inflict her with only one sentence — that is, sentence of death,” he added.
Former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also sentenced to death, while former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who pleaded guilty, received five years’ imprisonment.
The trial focused on the deadly crackdown against a student-led uprising that ousted Hasina in August 2024, during which the United Nations says up to 1,400 people were killed. Hasina has dismissed the proceedings as a “jurisprudential joke” and refused to recognise the court’s authority.
Security was heightened across Dhaka ahead of Monday’s verdict, with armoured vehicles and checkpoints deployed across key intersections.
