Police in Edo State have taken a 24-year-old TikTok user, Osarobo Omoyemen, into custody for allegedly fabricating a story claiming she had been abducted.
Gatekeepers News reports that she posted a video online alleging she was kidnapped along Upper Sakponba Road in Ikpoba-Okha LGA, rescued by officers, and later forced to pay N10,000 at Akpata Police Station before being released.
According to Police spokesperson Moses Yamu, the entire narrative was manufactured for online engagement. He said Omoyemen admitted during questioning that she created the scene to boost her TikTok following.
Investigators also recovered an earlier deleted clip in which someone in the background urged viewers to follow her account, revealing the planned nature of the stunt.
The police noted that the misleading video could have encouraged public hostility toward law enforcement and stirred unnecessary panic.
She has since been charged in court for spreading false information, while officers continue searching for others believed to have assisted her.
