Rivers State House of Assembly has approved a motion calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to run for another term in office.
Gatekeepers News reports that the decision was taken on Wednesday after Major Jack, the House Leader, presented the motion during plenary.
Jack, who represents Akuku-Toru I constituency, said the assembly was recognising Tinubu for steering the ship of the country in the right direction and asked lawmakers to support a call for the president to contest again in 2027 because of his leadership and love for Rivers state. At least 15 lawmakers sponsored the motion.
Every lawmaker who spoke during the session supported the proposal. Dumle Maol, representing Gokana constituency, explained that Tinubu appointed six people from his area to federal positions and that his constituents told him to back the motion.
He said, “My people have asked me to support this motion. The house should call on the president to contest again because you cannot change a winning team.”
Linda Somiari-Stewart, the Deputy House Leader, also supported the motion and said Tinubu had performed well. She said, “This motion is timely. The vote of confidence is not a mere ceremonial expression. It is a declaration that is solemn and weighty, and made when the nation demands stability, freedom, and leadership.”
Speaker Martins Amaewhule said the assembly would continue supporting the federal government rather than criticising it. He said, “The president is doing the needful (in terms of security). It is not enough to talk down on the federal government.”
Amaewhule added that citizens must support security agencies and provide information to help fight crime.
The assembly adopted the motion through a voice vote.
