Benue State Police Command has taken into custody a man suspected of involvement in several assaults on security personnel across the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to a report by Zagazola Makama, the counterinsurgency platform, the suspect identified as Yongu Justine Makwagh from Kadarko in Nasarawa State was picked up on Friday around 8pm at Balcony Park in Makurdi after months of tracking.
Makama reported that the Divisional Police Officer of Daudu coordinated the operation based on reliable intelligence, with support from operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team on special assignment.
The publication said Makwagh had long been wanted for alleged involvement in deadly incidents in the Sankera area.
Makama quoted a source as saying, “The suspect was earlier linked to the killing of two Safer Highway Police personnel at Yelwata and two operatives of the Department of Operations (DOPS) in Daudu, during which firearms were carted away.”
The arrest was described as a significant step in ongoing efforts to weaken bandit groups operating in Benue and nearby states.
Police sources were quoted as saying the suspect is now in custody and being interrogated, with further investigations underway to trace more weapons and identify other members of the network.
