LASTMA Decries ‘Preventable’ Deaths After Dual Road Accidents In Lagos

In a statement, LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the first accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. at the Otedola Bridge on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, inward Berger.

Gatekeepers Newreports that according to preliminary findings, an unregistered vehicle with two occupants, including the driver, rammed into a heavily loaded trailer. The impact reportedly killed both occupants instantly, while the trailer driver fled the scene.

LASTMA’s Night-Gang surveillance teams swiftly arrived to evacuate the victims and clear the wreckage to prevent secondary crashes. Officers from the Isheri Police Division and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) later supervised the removal of the remains in line with emergency procedures.

A second crash occurred at about 5:00 a.m. near the UNILAG waterfront on the Third Mainland Bridge, heading toward Lagos Island. An empty tanker was said to have collided with a pure-water distribution van (SMK 67 XH), leaving two persons with severe injuries.

LASAMBUS operatives stabilised the victims on-site before transporting them to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Despite both incidents, LASTMA said its personnel ensured uninterrupted traffic flow across the affected corridors, preventing further disruptions and ensuring road safety.

Bakare-Oki condoled with the families of the victims, stressing that the loss of life was “wholly preventable,” and attributing the tragedies to reckless speeding and disregard for traffic rules. He reiterated that strict compliance with speed limits remains crucial to saving lives.

He also praised LASTMA’s Night-Gang teams for their prompt response and professionalism, adding that the agency’s round-the-clock surveillance and emergency operations would continue under the Lagos State Government’s commitment to public safety and orderly traffic management.
