Nigeria Labour Congress has scheduled a nationwide protest for December 17, citing rising insecurity and frequent school abductions across the country.

Gatekeepers News reports that a notice circulated to all state councils on December 10 stated that the decision was reached at the NLC’s National Executive Committee meeting held on December 4.

The labour body criticised the persistent operations of bandits and kidnappers and highlighted the November 17 abduction of female boarding students in Kebbi State as a troubling example.

It condemned the withdrawal of security officers from the school before the attack, calling it a “dastardly and criminal” action that requires prompt investigation and prosecution.

According to the communiqué, the surge in kidnappings targeting schoolchildren has reached an alarming and unacceptable level.

NLC accused federal government of failing to provide adequate protection for schools, especially those located in remote and vulnerable communities.

The communiqué added, “The NEC-in-Session demands an immediate and thorough investigation into, and prosecution of, all those involved in the withdrawal of security personnel from the affected school.”

“The NEC-in-Session is concerned that the government has not done enough to secure all the schools, especially those on the fringes of the towns and those in remote areas, to stop attacks on innocent pupils and students and their teachers.”

The Congress instructed all affiliates and state councils to prepare workers and civil society groups for full participation in the December 17 demonstration against insecurity.
