Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced an improvement in electricity generation across the country following the repair of the vandalised Escravos–Lagos gas pipeline by the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company.
Gatekeepers News reports that the operator recalled that power generation on the national grid dropped on December 16 due to gas supply challenges caused by an explosion along the pipeline.
According to NISO, the restoration work has now improved gas availability to several key thermal power plants.
In a statement issued on Friday, NISO said the gradual recovery in generation is helping to stabilise electricity supply and strengthen grid reliability nationwide.
The operator said, “This development is a positive step towards stabilising electricity supply and improving grid reliability for consumers nationwide.”
“Currently, gradual power offtake is being carried out by the affected plants to ensure a smooth recovery and maintain the stability of both the gas supply network and the national electricity grid.”
NISO explained that the controlled approach is meant to prevent pressure on the system while ensuring steady electricity for homes, businesses, and industries.
The operator also disclosed that additional thermal power plants are on standby and are expected to resume operations once gas supply is fully confirmed by their suppliers before December 27, 2025.
It noted that these plants will be connected to the grid to further boost generation and reduce the likelihood of outages.
NISO added that it is working closely with power sector stakeholders to sustain the improvement in generation and advised electricity consumers to continue using power responsibly to support grid stability.
