Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revealed that its early investigation shows that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were the main factors behind the road crash involving British‑Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua along Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway on Monday.
Gatekeepers News reports that the accident happened just before noon near Sinoma, close to the Sagamu axis of the highway in Ogun State, when the Lexus Jeep carrying Joshua and four other men is reported to have lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle and crashed into a stationary commercial truck parked by the roadside.
FRSC officials say two of the occupants died instantly at the scene, one person was injured, and two others escaped without harm.
Joshua, who was travelling in the back seat, was rescued alive and sustained only minor injuries, and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The remains of the deceased were conveyed to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu.
FRSC operatives reached the crash site within minutes of being notified, helping to evacuate victims and manage traffic on the busy festive‑season corridor.
The corps warned motorists against speeding and unsafe overtaking, noting that these behaviours are among the leading causes of fatal road accidents on Nigerian highways.
Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division has also been informed and will continue investigations into the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
Local eyewitness accounts confirmed that the expressway section where the crash occurred is one of the busiest in the country and has been the scene of numerous deadly crashes, underscoring ongoing concerns about road safety and driver behaviour.
