Five people sustained gunshot injuries after suspected Berom militia members opened fire on their vehicle in Jos South LGA of Plateau State on the evening of December 27, 2025.
Gatekeepers News reports that the victims were returning from Kara Market (Bukuru cattle market) when attackers opened fire near Anguldi petrol station along the busy route.
The injured travellers: Abubakar Aji, Idi Saleh, Sulaiman, Nura Muhammad Detta, and Dabo Abubakar were immediately taken to Jos University Teaching Hospital by security personnel for treatment.
Ibrahim Yusuf, Plateau state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), condemned the attack and called on security agencies to investigate promptly and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The MACBAN chairman also urged the government to boost patrols on major highways to protect travellers and traders.
The ambush comes amid rising violence in Plateau, where armed groups and ethnic militias have repeatedly targeted commuters, pastoralists, and rural communities.
Earlier in December, at least 12 people were killed and several others wounded in a deadly assault on an illegal mining site in Fann District, Barkin Ladi LGA, according to multiple news reports.
During that incident, gunmen allegedly demanded information about missing cattle before executing miners and abducting some victims.
Security agencies have also documented a spate of attacks on livestock herders and villages across Barkin Ladi, Jos East, and Riyom LGAs this month, resulting in cattle rustling, poisoning of livestock, and revenge killings that have deepened tensions between farming and pastoralist communities.
Local leaders and residents continue to appeal for enhanced military and police presence along major thoroughfares as holiday travel increases, saying sustained insecurity is disrupting commerce and instilling fear among travellers.
