“I Once Washed Aircraft Toilet Myself As Governor”— Peter Obi Urges Leadership By Example

Peter Obi

Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023 election, has said that leadership by example is essential for addressing Nigeria’s worsening security situation.

Gatekeepers News reports that speaking during an interactive X Space session, the former Anambra State Governor stressed that the nation’s deteriorating security requires leaders who embody discipline, responsibility, and accountability rather than mere rhetoric.

In response to how he would confront insecurity, Obi shared a personal story from his time in office to demonstrate his leadership philosophy.

He recalled an occasion on a British Airways flight where he encountered an extremely dirty toilet. While another passenger declined to address it, Obi said he cleaned it himself without announcing it to anyone, insisting that leaders should act on wrongs they see instead of ignoring them.

Obi used the anecdote to highlight what he sees as a broader leadership failure in Nigeria, a country where many in authority fail to take ownership of problems and lead from the front.

Obi reaffirmed his belief that a hands‑on approach, rooted in integrity and personal commitment, is crucial if security and economic instability are to be overcome.

His remarks echo previous calls for concrete leadership actions, such as urging national leaders to cut the cost of governance, tackle corruption, and personally engage with challenges facing critical sectors like education and health care.

Obi also maintained that Nigeria’s security crisis cannot be separated from economic hardship, and that experienced, accountable leadership is key to restoring safety and stability.
