Anthony Joshua’s Driver May Be Arraigned Over Fatal Ogun Crash

Anthony Joshua’s driver, Kayode Adeniyi, may be arraigned in court as early as Friday following the fatal auto crash involving the former heavyweight boxing champion in Ogun State.

Gatekeepers Newreports that information filtering in from Abeokuta, the state capital, indicates that Adeniyi, who was driving the Lexus SUV involved in the accident, is currently being interrogated by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command at the Eleweran Police Station.

An officer of the command, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Adeniyi is in stable condition and has given his account of the incident.

“He is in a stable condition and was able to provide us with his version of events that led up to the crash. We expect a charging decision within the next 48 hours, but the bank holiday may delay proceedings.

“It is possible he could be in court on Friday, but it depends on how quickly the process moves, and it would be for reckless driving,” the officer told The Guardian.

Adeniyi is expected to face a two-count charge of reckless driving and manslaughter following the crash, which claimed the lives of two British men travelling with Joshua. The boxer survived the accident.

The incident occurred on Monday along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, when the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua collided with a stationary truck.

An eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, said Joshua was travelling with three other occupants at the time of the crash.

“Joshua was seated behind the driver with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash,” Orojo said.

Orojo added that the passenger seated beside the driver and the individual sitting next to Joshua died instantly.

Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the accident to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
