Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have recovered a large quantity of ammunition hidden inside a drainage channel in Bulumkutu railway area of Maiduguri, Borno State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the discovery was made during intelligence-driven cordon-and-search operations aimed at disrupting criminal and terrorist activities in the state.
According to security sources, the operation was carried out after residents alerted authorities to suspicious metallic objects sighted inside the drainage around 3:00 pm on Friday.
Military personnel, working with police explosive ordnance disposal teams, immediately cordoned off the area to prevent any security breach.
A detailed search of the drainage channel led to the recovery of 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, consisting of both live rounds and power banks concealed beneath debris.
Preliminary steps were taken to secure the location, while efforts continued to drain water from the channel to determine whether additional items were hidden.
Troops and other security agencies have since maintained a strong presence in the area to safeguard residents and critical infrastructure and to prevent any attempt to retrieve the recovered ammunition.
According to counterinsurgency reports, no casualties were recorded during the operation, and the security situation in the area remains calm, though under close monitoring.
The military has called on residents to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious movements or objects, stressing that timely information from the public remains crucial to sustaining peace and security in the north-east.
