AFCON 2025: Senegal Defeat Sudan To Reach Last Eight

Senegal secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after recording a 3-1 victory over Sudan in Tangiers on Saturday.

Gatekeepers News reports that the match started with a shock as Sudan took the lead in the sixth minute through Aamir Abdallah, whose fine finish caught Senegal off guard. The early goal briefly unsettled the former African champions, but they quickly regained control of the game.

Senegal responded with sustained pressure and were rewarded before the break, as Pape Gueye scored twice to turn the match around and give his side a 2-1 lead at half-time. His goals reflected Senegal’s dominance in midfield and attacking play as Sudan struggled to cope.

Teenage forward Ibrahim Mbaye sealed the win late in the second half, scoring just minutes after coming on as a substitute to make it 3-1. The goal ended Sudan’s resistance and confirmed Senegal’s progression to the last eight.

Senegal made several changes to their starting line-up, with captain Kalidou Koulibaly missing the match due to suspension.

Despite the adjustments, the team showed depth and composure against a Sudan side that had reached the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.

Senegal will now face either Mali or Tunisia in the quarter-finals as they continue their campaign at AFCON 2025.
