Reps Release Tax Laws For Public Review After Alteration Allegations

House of Representatives has made public the four tax reform laws recently signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following claims that the versions passed by lawmakers differed from copies circulating publicly.

Gatekeepers News reports that the move was announced on Saturday night by Akin Rotimi, spokesperson of the House, who said the decision was taken to promote openness and address concerns raised by Nigerians over the integrity of the legislation.

The controversy began after Abdussamad Dasuki, a member of the House, alleged that the gazetted versions of the tax laws did not fully reflect what was approved by the National Assembly. The allegation triggered public reactions, with calls from some quarters for a pause in the implementation of the new tax regime.

The laws released are the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025; Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025; Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025; and the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025.

The reforms are part of the federal government’s broader effort to modernise tax collection, expand the revenue base, and reduce leakages in the system.

According to Rotimi, Speaker Abbas, working with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, directed the immediate release of the Certified True Copies of the Acts, including the endorsement and assent pages signed by the President, after concerns emerged over purported alterations and the circulation of unauthorised and misleading versions of the laws.

He said the action followed the discovery of conflicting versions of the laws, which were brought to the attention of the House by a member who raised the issue on a point of privilege.

The Speaker, he added, ordered an internal verification and approved the public release of the certified documents to clear doubts and protect the credibility of the legislature.

Rotimi quoted the Speaker as assuring Nigerians that the National Assembly operates as an institution of records with clear procedures that preserve the authenticity of all enacted laws.

He urged the public to disregard “any other documents or versions in circulation that are not certified by the national assembly”.

The spokesperson also said the clerk of the National Assembly has completed the process of aligning the certified Acts with the government printing press to ensure consistency.

Hard copies have been distributed to lawmakers and made available to the public to guarantee uniform reference and legal certainty.

The Speaker further noted that the National Assembly would remain vigilant in defending the integrity of its legislative work, stressing that only the certified versions released by the legislature constitute the valid and authoritative tax laws.
