The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has confirmed a fire outbreak involving a 15 MVA TR3 power transformer at the IBB Way Injection Substation in Katsina, resulting in a power outage across several parts of the state capital.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communication, Sani Bala Sani, and issued on Monday, KEDCO said the incident occurred late on Sunday, January 4, 2026. The company added that the cause of the fire was yet to be determined.
According to KEDCO, technical teams have been deployed to the substation to investigate the cause of the incident, assess the extent of damage to the affected equipment and initiate measures to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible.
“As a safety precaution, the affected areas have been isolated to protect lives and property,” the distribution company stated.
KEDCO disclosed that the outage has affected several parts of Katsina metropolis, including Kofar Kaura, the Government Reserved Area (GRA), Dandagoro, parts of Kofar Marusa, Janbango, Kano Road and surrounding areas.
The company expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to customers and assured that safety considerations and the prompt restoration of power supply remain its top priorities.
KEDCO added that further updates would be provided as investigations continue and restoration work progresses.
