Rivers State House of Assembly has begun impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, accusing them of gross misconduct in office.

Gatekeepers News reports that at a plenary session on Thursday presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read a notice of allegations signed by 26 lawmakers, invoking Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and said the notice would be served on the governor within seven days as required by law.

The impeachment notice against Fubara lists seven alleged breaches, including the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, extra‑budgetary spending without legislative approval, withholding funds due the Assembly Service Commission, and failing to comply with a Supreme Court ruling on the financial autonomy of the legislature.

In the same sitting, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, presented a separate notice accusing Deputy Governor Odu of reckless and unconstitutional spending of public funds, obstructing the Assembly from carrying out its constitutional duties, and allowing unauthorised persons to occupy government offices without proper legislative screening.

The move comes amid an extended political crisis in the oil‑producing state, with repeated tensions between Fubara and lawmakers and other actors over control and governance issues.
