Federal Government has assured that outstanding match bonuses for Super Eagles at 2025 Africa Cup of Nations have cleared the necessary regulatory stages and will be credited into players’ accounts starting today or tomorrow.
Gatekeepers News reports that the minister of state for finance, Doris Uzoka‑Anite, announced this in a Thursday statement.
The payment delay followed the conversion process to move funds into foreign currency that the players preferred, but Uzoka‑Anite said the system has now been expedited and the final transfers to domiciliary accounts are currently in flight.
She added that Federal Government and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have successfully streamlined the foreign exchange processing to ensure the players are rewarded without further delay, and that future payments will be quicker and in line with international practice.
Earlier this week, the Eagles threatened not to travel to Marrakesh for their AFCON quarter‑final against Algeria after complaining that allowances for all four matches had not been paid.
Nigeria, having won all four games and scored 12 goals to top Group C, is scheduled to play Algeria on Saturday, with the winner set to meet either Morocco or Cameroon in the semi‑finals.
TheAFCON.com reports that team morale has been under strain due to repeated payment issues, after training boycotts over allowances affected Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign in 2024.
Uzoka‑Anite’s update appears to have calmed tensions, but it arrives amid broader concerns over foreign exchange procedures that have complicated payments for national teams and other stakeholders in international competitions.
