Super Eagles Threaten To Boycott Travel To Algeria Over Unpaid AFCON Allowances

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have reportedly threatened to boycott their trip to Marrakesh for the quarter-final match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to unpaid allowances.

Gatekeepers Newreports that an insider close to the team told TheCable on Wednesday that the players and officials have yet to receive bonuses for the four matches they have played so far in the tournament.

Nigeria has been in impressive form at the competition, winning all four matches, topping Group C, and emerging as the highest scoring side with 12 goals. The team most recently thrashed Mozambique 4-0 in Fez, Morocco.

The Eagles are scheduled to travel from Fez to Marrakesh on Thursday to face Algeria on Saturday, but the players have made it clear they will refuse to travel if their outstanding payments are not settled.

“The players are damn serious. I hope we can find a way to resolve it,” the insider said.

This is the second time in a few months that the Super Eagles have protested over unpaid bonuses. In November 2024, the team boycotted training during the African World Cup playoffs due to a backlog of allowances. Shortly after, Nigeria lost to DR Congo, ending the country’s bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
