Edo State Government has clarified issues surrounding the protest that disrupted vehicular movement in Ekpoma on Saturday, January 10, stressing that uncoordinated actions could undermine ongoing security efforts.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement signed by Prince Kassim Afegbua, the state’s Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, the government acknowledged the constitutional right of citizens to express grievances.

It however, warned that blocking roads and disrupting public movement in the name of protest does not support security operations. It noted that such actions could expose residents to further risks or be exploited by criminal elements.

The government said Governor Monday Okpebholo has remained responsive to genuine security concerns since assuming office, adding that effective security management requires calm, coordination, intelligence sharing, and constructive engagement with relevant agencies rather than unstructured protests.

According to the statement, the Governor’s security strategy focuses on proactive measures, including strengthening the Edo Security Corps, supporting neighbourhood watch initiatives, and maintaining continuous engagement with community leaders, traditional institutions, and neighbouring states. The governement said these platforms are available for residents to report concerns and provide useful information.

The state government warned that protests related to security issues could distract security agencies from active operations and complicate efforts to tackle criminal activities. Residents were therefore urged to remain law-abiding, calm, and supportive of security operatives working to protect lives and property.

The government reassured the people of Ekpoma and the wider Edo State that security strategies are being continuously reviewed and strengthened in line with Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to ensuring safety across the state.
