Rivers State House of Assembly has raised the alarm over what it described as moves to illegally obtain court orders aimed at stopping the legislature from carrying out its constitutional functions.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement issued on Sunday, Enemi George, chairman of the House Committee on information, petitions and complaints, said the assembly received intelligence indicating that certain individuals were seeking ex parte orders from courts outside the Port Harcourt judicial division to interfere with ongoing legislative activities.
The lawmakers said those allegedly behind the plan were fully aware of constitutional provisions and existing judicial decisions that restrict courts from intervening in internal legislative proceedings.
They warned that such actions, if carried out, would amount to an abuse of the judicial process and a threat to constitutional order.
The assembly called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law, urging affected public office holders to respond formally to allegations already served on them rather than pursue actions capable of escalating tensions in the state.
According to the statement, the Rivers Assembly remains committed to due process and will continue to discharge its duties in line with the constitution, despite what it described as attempts to intimidate or distract lawmakers.
The development comes amid the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, rooted in the power struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The rivalry has repeatedly stalled governance and triggered impeachment threats since 2023.
Although President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened in 2025 by declaring a six-month state of emergency that temporarily suspended both the executive and legislature, tensions resurfaced after the emergency rule ended.
The renewed crisis has since led to fresh impeachment moves against the Governor and his deputy, further deepening political uncertainty in the state.
