Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 12 people in a multiple-vehicle accident along the Yangoji–Abuja road in the Federal Capital Territory.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to Segun Ogungbemide, FRSC spokesperson, the crash happened around 11:45am on Sunday at the Gada Biyu area.
He said four vehicles were involved, including a commercial trailer carrying coal, a commercial bus, and two commercial cars.
Ogungbemide explained that initial investigations pointed to excessive speed and dangerous driving by the truck driver as the cause of the crash.
Further investigation revealed that the truck driver was driving at an excessive speed beyond the prescribed limit for the corridor, lost control, and rammed into already parked vehicles, leading to the fatal crash.
FRSC said a total of 18 people were affected in the incident. Five victims died on the spot, while seven others who were rescued and taken to the hospital later died from their injuries.
Ogungbemide said, “Five victims died instantly at the scene, while seven others, who were rescued and taken to the hospital, later died from their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to 12.”
He added that three other victims sustained injuries such as cuts, fractures, and head injuries, and are currently receiving treatment.
FRSC urged motorists to obey speed limits and avoid reckless driving, especially on busy corridors, to prevent similar tragedies.
