The national working committee of thPeoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the leadership of Kabiru Turaki has rejected claims that it directed members to pay N10,000 each to finance party activities.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement released on Sunday, the party’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, explained that his earlier remarks during an interview were misunderstood.

He said he was responding to a question on how the party intends to sustain its activities following the defection of some Governors, but his response was wrongly presented.

“The strategy is simple: go back to the people. When the people are with you voluntarily, they fund the cause. In 1998, people made small contributions to fund the party, and that gave them a voice,” Ememobong said while recalling his comments.

He added, “We are returning to that voluntary model. For example, if 60 million Nigerians each give N10,000, that’s a huge sum. We are already seeing this kind of mass support in states like Plateau and Akwa Ibom.”

Ememobong noted that although his statements were correctly quoted in the report, the headline distorted the actual message. He stressed that the mention of N10,000 was only an example used to explain how voluntary contributions can add up, not an instruction or compulsory payment.

“Let it be stated unequivocally: there is no fixed amount, no compulsory payment, and no obligation imposed on any member of the PDP,” he said.

He therefore called on party members and the public to ignore the report and continue supporting the PDP willingly in whatever way they choose.
