A former unit head of National Union of Road Transport Workers, Kazeem Oyewole, has been reported murdered in Osogbo, Osun State, after an attack by suspected hoodlums on Sunday afternoon, police and eyewitnesses say.

Gatekeepers News reports that the incident happened around Elelede Junction/Orita Elelede area of the state capital, where a gang of unidentified youths allegedly mounted a base and began collecting money from people passing through, claiming to be raising funds for a carnival.

Eyewitnesses said Oyewole and another man were riding on a motorcycle when the hoodlums stopped them. During a confrontation, shots were reportedly fired before the attackers struck Oyewole with large stones, killing him instantly. The other rider escaped but suffered serious injuries.

A shop owner at the junction said that when NURTW members arrived after the attack, they identified the dead man as Kazeem Oyewole, who served as part-time chairman of the union’s Aregbe unit from 2018 to 2022.

After the killing, some NURTW associates reportedly moved around motor parks in Osogbo searching for suspects, heightening tension in the area. Police confirmed that officers have been deployed and have begun an investigation into the killing.

Residents said business activities near the scene were disrupted as people fled for safety while police patrols were increased to prevent reprisals.

This violent attack follows another recent killing in the state, when a NURTW leader in Ilesa was shot dead by unknown gunmen in November 2025, raising concerns about rising insecurity in parts of Osun.

Osun State Police Command is continuing its probe to determine how the attack unfolded and to arrest those responsible.
