President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Sir Gilbert Chagoury, a Nigerian‑Lebanese billionaire businessman and philanthropist, in recognition of his outstanding virtues and services to Nigeria.
Gatekeepers News reports that the award was presented under the National Honours Act in Abuja on January 8, 2026.
Chagoury, widely known for his decades‑long role in driving private‑sector growth, has been involved in major real estate and infrastructure developments in Nigeria, including projects such as Banana Island and Eko Atlantic City, which have shaped Lagos’ urban landscape.
The official Instrument of Conferment of National Honour signed by President Tinubu states that the award is given in recognition of his outstanding virtues and in appreciation of his services to Nigeria.
Prominent businessman Femi Otedola publicly congratulated Chagoury, describing him as a role model and mentor whose work has created jobs and contributed to national development. Otedola said Chagoury’s legacy includes vision, discipline, and impactful leadership.
The GCON is one of Nigeria’s highest national honours, typically reserved for individuals whose contributions have had a significant national impact. Chagoury’s recognition places him among other distinguished recipients noted for advancing Nigeria’s growth and private sector development.
