At least four people were killed and three others injured when suspected Lakurawa terrorists attacked Baidi village in Tangaza LGA, Sokoto.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incident reportedly took place around 9:30 pm on Thursday, according to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication covering the Lake Chad region.
Security sources told Makama that the heavily armed attackers entered the village in large numbers, carried out their operation for several minutes, and then fled. A communication blackout in the border community, near Niger Republic, delayed initial reports of the assault.
Troops from Operation FANSAN YANMA, along with police and Sokoto Community Guard Corps personnel, were later deployed to the area. Makama reported that the bodies of the victims and the injured were taken to a hospital for medical attention and autopsy.
Security agencies have launched a manhunt for the attackers, with patrols increased in nearby communities to reassure residents and prevent further incidents.
The attack comes about a month after the United States conducted air strikes against camps linked to Islamic State-affiliated and Lakurawa groups in Sokoto.
The strikes, carried out on Christmas Day, aimed to weaken terrorist networks along Nigeria’s north-western border corridor, though details on casualties and the operation’s full impact were not officially released.
Meanwhile, Christopher Musa, Minister of Defence, has repeatedly warned that Nigeria’s porous borders contribute to insecurity.
He said the federal government is exploring measures to stop illegal crossings that allow terrorists, kidnappers, and bandits to operate freely, including building border barriers and deploying advanced technology.
