Rivers United picked up their first point of the CAF Champions League campaign after holding Zambia’s Power Dynamos to a 0-0 draw in their Group A matchday three clash played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday.
Gatekeepers News reports that Nigeria Professional Football League side went into the encounter under pressure after losing their opening two group matches, and approached the game with caution and discipline.
Power Dynamos, who were also without a win in the group, dominated possession for long spells but failed to convert their chances.
Despite sustained pressure from the hosts, Rivers United stayed organised at the back and relied on counterattacks that did not produce clear openings.
The Zambian side registered numerous goal attempts, but goalkeeper Osagie Onisodumeya was in fine form, making several key saves in both halves to frustrate the home team.
The clean sheet extended Rivers United’s solid defensive run, as the Nigerian club has now gone four matches without conceding a goal in all competitions.
It also marked a notable achievement, with Rivers United becoming the first NPFL team to prevent a Zambian side from scoring at home in continental competition.
As a result, both teams opened their points account in Group A. Rivers United sit third with one point from three matches, trailing leaders RS Berkane and Pyramids, who both have six points but have played one game fewer.
Power Dynamos also have one point and remain bottom of the group after failing to score in their first three games.
Attention now shifts to the reverse fixture, where Rivers United will host Power Dynamos at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on February 1, as George Finidi’s side looks to build on the result and revive their Champions League campaign.
