Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, eldest son of former Kano State Governor and NNPP leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from his role as Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development and as a member of Kano State Executive Council.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement shared on his official social media page on Monday, Mustapha said the decision was taken with a heavy heart as he announced his exit from the cabinet of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

He thanked the Governor for the opportunity to serve the people of Kano State and described his time in office as filled with valuable lessons and experience.

Mustapha called on leaders in the state to continue giving attention and support to the youth and to maintain momentum for programmes aimed at empowering young people and developing sports. He also offered prayers for continued peace, progress, and success for the government and the people of Kano State.

His resignation comes at a time of significant political shifts in Kano, following Governor Yusuf’s formal exit from New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and his planned move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Governor’s defection has sparked a series of resignations among officials perceived to be loyal to the Kwankwasiyya political faction, including other commissioners who stepped down recently amid disagreements over the government’s direction.

Mustapha did not specify exact reasons for leaving beyond expressing that his decision was difficult, but analysts say his resignation reflects broader tensions within the state’s political landscape following the Governor’s realignment with the APC.

“As I resign, I pray that the youth of Kano State will continue to receive the attention and support they deserve,” he said, adding optimism that sports development initiatives will flourish in years ahead.
