Oyo State Police Command has intercepted a truck loaded with materials suspected to be explosives in the Sango area of Ibadan, the state capital.
Gatekeepers News reports that the interception occurred during a stop-and-search operation following an intelligence tip-off. This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by Ayanlade Olayinka, the police spokesperson in the state.
Olayinka said the driver of the truck was arrested and taken into custody alongside the suspected explosive items, which he said were about 42 in number.
According to the statement, the commissioner of police in Oyo State, Femi Haruna, has directed that a thorough investigation be conducted to uncover the details surrounding the incident.
The spokesperson added that officers from the explosive ordnance disposal unit and the chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear unit have been deployed to secure the materials and carry out forensic examinations.
He explained that forensic analysis is currently ongoing to confirm the exact nature of the items and determine their intended use.
Olayinka assured residents that the situation is under control and that there is no need for panic, adding that the police would provide further updates as investigations continue.
