The Lagos State Government has assured motorists of smooth traffic flow and public safety as rehabilitation work begins on the 20-kilometre Lekki–Epe Expressway, a project scheduled to last 64 days.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, gave the assurance on Tuesday, saying comprehensive and well-coordinated traffic management plans have been put in place to minimise inconvenience to road users during the construction period.
Addressing officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Giwa clarified that the rehabilitation will not require a total closure of the expressway. He explained that traffic control measures will instead be strategically applied at key intersections to limit disruption and maintain steady vehicular movement along the corridor.
Giwa disclosed that the traffic management plan would be implemented in phases, with more than 305 LASTMA operatives deployed to reinforce the three existing traffic management zones along the Lekki–Epe axis.
According to him, the expanded deployment is aimed at ensuring free flow of traffic, rapid response to incidents and strict enforcement of traffic regulations to maintain orderliness and road safety throughout the rehabilitation period.
He noted the significant rise in vehicular movement and haulage activities along the corridor, attributing it to major economic and infrastructure assets such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Free Trade Zone, Dangote Refinery and other fast-growing commercial and industrial hubs.
To address potential traffic emergencies, Giwa said LASTMA has stationed a range of high-, medium- and low-capacity recovery vehicles, including tow trucks, to promptly remove broken-down vehicles and prevent secondary congestion.
He added that the agency will deploy drone technology for real-time aerial monitoring to quickly detect, assess and resolve traffic incidents along the Lekki–Epe Expressway and other strategic locations across the state.
Giwa further revealed that the traffic management framework includes the installation of clear directional signage, adequate lighting and other essential safety features along the construction corridor.
In addition, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) brigade have been deployed to support LASTMA, enhance security and protect lives and property during the rehabilitation exercise.
Motorists were advised to explore alternative routes to reduce pressure on the expressway, with Giwa recommending the Coaster Road from Ogombo through Abraham Adesanya as a viable option.
He appealed to road users to exercise patience, comply with traffic rules and cooperate with traffic officials, stressing that discipline and collective responsibility are crucial to the success of the project.
Members of the public were also encouraged to report traffic incidents via the LASTMA toll-free hotline, 080000527862, with assurances of swift and professional response.
The state government appealed for residents’ understanding and cooperation, describing the rehabilitation as critical to improving mobility, enhancing road safety and supporting sustainable economic growth.
