FG To Arraign Yelewata Killings Suspects Monday

Federal Government has announced that individuals arrested in connection with the deadly attack in Yelewata, Benue State will be brought before a federal court on Monday, February 2, 2026, to face charges.

Gatekeepers News reports that this was disclosed in an official statement released on Sunday by Kamarudeen Ogundele, the Special Assistant on Communication and Publicity to the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice.

According to the statement, the decision to arraign the suspects follows a comprehensive and coordinated investigation involving multiple government security and intelligence agencies.

The suspects are expected to appear before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik at the Federal High Court in Abuja to answer for offences linked to the violent incident.

The massacre in Yelewata, a community in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, occurred in June 2025 when heavily armed gunmen stormed the town late at night.

Reports from human rights organisations and eyewitness accounts indicate that between around 100 and possibly over 200 people were killed, many of them displaced villagers or internally displaced persons sheltering in the community, and roughly 3,000 people fled their homes as the violence unfolded.

In past briefings, the Inspector-General of Police confirmed that security forces had detained dozens of suspects believed to be involved in the attack, with at least 28 individuals reportedly linked to the Yelewata incident.

In Sunday’s statement, Federal Government stressed its commitment to securing justice for the victims and holding the perpetrators accountable, aiming to send a clear message that perpetrators of such violence will face the full force of the law.

The declaration also reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to protecting lives and property as guaranteed under the Nigerian constitution.
