Sultan Announces Ramadan Start As Crescent Is Sighted

Sultan of Sokoto and President of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially declared the sighting of the new moon, confirming that the 2026 Ramadan fast will commence on Wednesday, February 18, across Nigeria.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement released on Tuesday by the Sultanate Council in Sokoto, the Islamic leader explained that credible and verified reports of the crescent were received from different locations nationwide. The reports were carefully reviewed and authenticated in line with established Islamic guidelines before the final announcement was made.

The Sultan, who was represented by the Shehu of Borno, Shehu Abubakar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi, said the confirmation followed thorough consultations with religious leaders, traditional rulers, and moon sighting committees across the country. He noted that the process ensured accuracy, unity, and nationwide acceptance of the decision.

With the announcement, Muslims across Nigeria are expected to begin the month-long fast, which includes daily abstinence from food and drink from dawn to sunset, increased prayers, charity, and spiritual reflection.

The Sultan urged Muslims to use the holy month to pray for peace, security, and national development, while encouraging acts of kindness, patience, and unity. He also called on wealthy individuals and organisations to intensify charitable efforts to support vulnerable citizens amid ongoing economic challenges.

Ramadan is regarded as the most sacred period in the Islamic calendar, marking the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed. The commencement of fasting is traditionally determined by the physical sighting of the crescent moon, a practice that remains central to Islamic tradition in Nigeria and many parts of the Muslim world.
