Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), working with the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) enforcement team, has sealed off the old Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) building on Marcathy Street in Obalende area of Lagos Island after finding that untreated sewage was being discharged from the property into public drainage channels.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said in a Friday statement on social media that the action was taken because the raw wastewater was being released deliberately into public drains, creating pollution, offensive odours, and health risks for residents in the area.

Authorities noted that the building, which has been occupied by unauthorised squatters without regulatory oversight, had become a source of environmental nuisance and a potential threat to community health standards, particularly given the risk of water‑borne diseases linked to poor sanitation.

The enforcement operation forms part of wider efforts by the Lagos State Government to curb environmental violations and improve wastewater management in the city, with officials warning that continued breaches of sanitation laws will attract sanctions and possible prosecution.

Residents have also been urged to adopt proper hygiene and wastewater disposal practices to support public health and environmental sustainability across the state.
