Former presidential candidate, Remi Sonaiya, has expressed serious concern over the safety of passengers and residents after witnessing people sleeping directly on the Lagos-Ibadan railway tracks at the Agege train station in Lagos.
Gatekeepers News reports that Sonaiya shared her experience in a post on her social media page on Thursday, stating that the disturbing scene occurred while she was preparing to board the train to Ibadan for the first time.
“I’m taking the train to Ibadan for the first time, boarding at Agege. My excitement was greatly dampened by the sight that greeted us as we approached the train: people sleeping on some of the tracks,” she wrote.
She added that officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) informed passengers that they were unable to force the individuals to vacate the tracks, despite the grave safety risks involved.
“They said they couldn’t force them to move. How safe is this?” Sonaiya queried.
Her comments have renewed public concern over persistent safety challenges, illegal encroachment, and poor enforcement of railway regulations along the Lagos-Ibadan rail corridor.
NRC has repeatedly warned against trespassing on rail tracks, stressing that such actions endanger lives, disrupt operations, and could lead to fatal accidents.
The incident has also intensified calls for a stronger security presence, public sensitisation, and stricter enforcement to prevent further safety lapses on the busy rail line.
