Oyo State Police Command has taken a 20-year-old man into custody following his alleged involvement in the unlawful possession of a suspected human body part in Oyo town.
Gatekeepers News reports that the command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan.
He explained that members of a local community vigilance group intercepted the suspect on Friday morning at about 8:00 am in the Oroki area after noticing his unusual movement and behaviour.
According to him, the suspect, who reportedly disguised himself as a scavenger, was subjected to a search by concerned residents, during which a human right leg was discovered inside a sack filled with waste plastic bottles in his possession.
“Upon receipt of the report, a Police joint patrol team, in collaboration with other security partners, swiftly rushed to the scene where an angry mob had gathered with intent to lynch the suspect.
The team professionally dispersed the mob and rescued him from imminent harm, while the suspected human part was recovered as exhibit and secured for forensic and investigative purposes,” Olayinka said.
He added that the suspect has been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department, where a thorough and discreet investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish possible links to criminal networks.
The police spokesperson commended the vigilance group and residents for their alertness and timely response, noting that their actions reflect the importance of community involvement in crime detection and prevention. He stressed that public cooperation remains vital in strengthening security across the state.
However, Olayinka cautioned residents against resorting to mob action or taking the law into their hands, warning that such acts are illegal and could hinder proper justice delivery.
He urged members of the public to always report suspicious activities to security agencies and allow lawful procedures to take their course.
