FG Approves Medical Fellowship As Equivalent Of PHD

Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a major change in the academic qualifications framework that will allow medical fellowship qualifications awarded by recognised postgraduate medical colleges to be treated as equivalent to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree for academic and professional purposes.

Gatekeepers News reports that the policy shift was announced on March 5, 2026, by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja. The council also approved several other education reforms at the meeting.

Under the approved reforms, amendments to the National Postgraduate Medical College Act will be sent to the National Assembly for legislative approval. Once passed, the amendments will enable fellows of recognised medical colleges, such as National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and other accredited postgraduate bodies, to have their qualifications treated as on par with a PhD when being considered for academic promotion, professorial appointments, and other roles traditionally requiring a doctoral degree.

Officials say the reform is aimed at addressing long‑standing concerns from medical professionals who argue that completing rigorous clinical training, residency, and fellowship programmes can take as long as or longer than traditional PhD studies, yet those qualifications have not always been recognised for academic ranking or career progression.

The recognition is expected to remove barriers for super‑specialised doctors in Nigerian universities and health institutions, helping to harmonise academic and professional credentials in the country’s education and medical sectors.

This development forms part of a broader education sector reform that also includes the restoration of National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non‑Formal Education, and a six‑year moratorium on the establishment of new tertiary institutions to prioritise quality and sustainability.
