The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the demolition and reconstruction of the Carter Bridge, according to David Umahi, minister of works.
Gatekeepers News reports that Umahi made the announcement on Wednesday while briefing journalists at the State House after a meeting of the council chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
The minister said the council also approved N5.6 billion for the engagement of advanced engineering consultants to undertake the design and cost evaluation for the project.
“Recall that we have been to FEC and got approval after going through stakeholders’ engagements. The total recommendation was that Carter Bridge can no longer be rehabilitated; it should be demolished and then a new bridge constructed,” Umahi said.
He explained that rebuilding the bridge forms part of the administration’s broader push to strengthen critical transport infrastructure nationwide.
According to Umahi, the council approved six major infrastructure projects during the meeting, including highway reconstruction and upgrades across several geopolitical zones.
“We are presenting a minimum of four completed projects in each zone for presidential commissioning by May 15. These are not palliative works; they are major infrastructure projects,” he said.
The Carter Bridge, which connects Lagos Island with the mainland, is one of the city’s key traffic corridors and carries heavy vehicular movement daily.
